Life and Background of Baba Adab
Born into a humble family in Pune, Baba Adhav faced numerous hardships from an early age. His father died when he was just three months old, leaving his mother to bring up him and his four siblings. Despite financial difficulties, his mother’s dedication instilled in him the values of perseverance and hard work. Baba Adab completed his early education in a government school and then joined the Shivaji Maratha School, Pune. He then continued his medical studies at Tarachand Ramnath Ayurvedic College, graduating in 1952. His career in Ayurveda began in Pune, where he served the local community as a general practitioner.

This experience motivated him to focus on fighting the systematic exploitation of these workers. In the early 1960s, Baba Adhav founded the Hamal Panchayat, a trade union aimed at improving the conditions of head loaders in Pune. His efforts led to the passage of the Maharashtra Masadhi Hamal and Other Manual Workers Act in 1969, providing legal protection and social security to these workers.
